Where are lessons provided?
Beverly Hills Music Institute offers online and in-home private lessons. We are based in Los Angeles, California so depending on instructor availability, we can provide in-home lessons in your area. Online lessons are offered in all time zones!
What ages do you teach?
At BHMI we offer lessons to children and adults. In general, 4 years old is a good time to begin private lessons. Before that age, it may be more beneficial to participate in a group introductory music class. We love older learners and no previous musical experience is required to start classes!
Can I learn (insert song name here)?
Yes! Our teachers love exploring all genres of music so we'd be happy to help you learn your favorite pop, musical theatre, classical, jazz, or rock song. If we can find a version of the song that is suitable for your level, we'd love to teach it to you. Patience is key when learning any instrument, so the more you skills you learn, the more diverse material you will be able to play.
What type of lessons do you offer?
We currently offer private lessons in piano, voice, songwriting, guitar, ukulele, bass, and drums. If the instrument you are interested in is not listed here, feel free to reach out and we may be able to provide a recommendation for a teacher not in our network.
Do you need to own an instrument to begin?
While taking lessons, students are expected to own an instrument so that they may practice at home. If you are new to your instrument, our instructors can provide suggestions and recommendations on brands and qualifications.
Are there opportunities to perform?
Currently we hold biannual piano recitals for students located in Los Angeles. We may host recitals for other instruments in the future based on demand. Participation is highly encouraged but not mandatory.
How does payment work and what is the cancellation policy?
At BHMI we invoice for lessons monthly. Students have lessons scheduled on the same day/time each week. Lesson cancellations can be made up to 48 hours in advance of the lesson time for a full refund (or less if due to contagious illness). If proper notice is not given, lessons will be charged at the full price. This is because our instructors likely will not have a chance to recover the lost income for short-notice cancellations. Lessons fees are listed on our "prices" page. Keep in mind that our instructors are contractors, so the lesson fee includes costs for healthcare, retirement planning, gas prices, etc. Thank you for supporting a healthy work environment for music teachers in Los Angeles!
How often should I practice?
Your teacher can make personalized recommendations on how frequently you should practice in order to reach your musical goals. In general, reviewing your music 3 times a week in addition to your weekly lessons is a great place to start. As with many things in life, you will get out of it what you put in! So 1-2 practices a week may be appropriate for a casual learner, whereas a student who practices 4-5 times per week will advance rapidly.
Do you offer discounts?
Yes! Prices are discounted for multiple lessons per location. This is because it cuts down on the commute time for our teachers. Please see our "prices" page for more details and feel free to reach out with any questions.
